C’mon ladies and gents, put the mayonnaise down! Sure, we’ve all heard plenty of weird, wonderful and outright strange beauty tips and tricks that will apparently do wonders to your hair – but it’s finally time to separate the fact from the fiction!
When it comes to the health of your hair, there are many factors that come into play, including the texture, the length and the condition. So, before you start lathering your hair with lemon juice (or mayonnaise), washing it three times a day or combing it for 2 hours each night – here is the first part of our guide to debunking some of the biggest and most popular hair myths that we’ve all heard! And don’t forget, as specialists of hair extensions in Edinburgh – we know what we’re talking about! Enjoy.
1. MYTH: The more you cut your hair, the faster it will grow.
While regular trims are fantastic for keeping hair healthy and preventing damage, it won’t make your hair grow any faster, no matter how often you get it cut. Hair grows from the root, not the ends!
The Answer: Continue to get your hair cut regularly. Having healthy looking hair will help to give the appearance that your hair is growing faster, and will keep your hair looking and feeling wonderful.
2. MYTH: You should wash your hair every day.
Washing your hair everyday can cause natural oil in your scalp to build up. This will make your hair look greasy.
The Answer: Wash your hair only when it is needed. If your hair feels heavy, or looks greasy – it’s time to wash! We recommend that you wash your hair every 2-3 days.
3. Your hair loves cold water. It’ll make it shine!
This beauty myth is actually 50% accurate. Cold water does improve the shininess of your hair, but not dramatically. So, we really don’t recommend you wash your hair in icy water too often!
The Answer: For comfort and shiny hair, use luke-warm water, once a week to increase your hair follicles’ circulation.
4. MYTH: Change your shampoo every once in awhile to rejuvenate your hair!
There is absolutely no connection between bad hair and repeat use of shampoo. When it comes to choosing the right shampoo for you, opt for a product that suits your hair type (coloured, frizzy, fine etc.)
The Answer: It’s always great to try something new, but like the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
5. If you pluck a grey hair, three more will sprout in its place!
Plucking grey hairs does not create more grey hair. However, plucking hair can create scalp irritation, which in turn can be harmful to the hair follicle.
The Answer: If you start to see grey hairs, try a ‘grey corrector’ which uses a small amount of dye to cover greys. And if you don’t fancy that – grow old gracefully. After all, grey hair is so on-trend right now!
