Our head naturally produces oil that keep the scalp and hair looking healthy, but what happens when too much oil is produced?
Do you wash your hair in the morning and it looks greasy by the end of the day? This can be an embarrassing and frustrating problem. Luckily, there are a number of things that you can do to prevent your hair from becoming too oily after being washed.
Below are some potential factors that cause greasy hair and some tips on stopping it from happening.
Over Using Conditioner
Conditioner is used as a moisturiser for the hair, adding shine and volume to otherwise dull and lacklustre hair. It can also be a miracle worker when it comes to washing hair that is full of hair products. Without conditioner, it can be a nightmare to brush once washed. However, how much is too much? Experts believe that too much conditioner can be the reason behind hair that quickly goes greasy. It can leave the hair looking limp and greasy, which means it will need washing sooner rather than later.
So what can be done? You shouldn’t condition your hair every time you wash it. Once or twice a week would be completely fine – your hair has natural oils that condition the hair. However, for those who rely on conditioner, we advise just applying a small amount to the ends of the hair.
Touching Your Hair Excessively
Whether it’s something you do consciously or you don’t even realise you’re doing it, touching your hair constantly throughout the day is bad for its health. Touching your hair spreads germs from your hands to your hair – causing it to become greasier a lot quicker than it should.
So what can be done? Apart from making an effort to stop twiddling your hair or running a hand through it, you should always avoid restyling it throughout the day. We suggest styling it once in the morning and then leaving it. Constant brushing has the same effort of touching it with your fingers.
Washing Hair Too Much
The more you wash your hair, the greasier it gets. The greasier your hair gets, the more you wash it. Frustrating right? Whilst shampoo does remove grease, it also strips away the natural oil from your hair. This means your hair is more vulnerable to damage, leaving it feeling dry and brittle.
So what can be done? Make dry shampoo your best friend. It’s perfect for refreshing your hair between washes. You need to find a washing schedule that doesn’t leave your hair feeling dry and damaged – we recommend every 2 or 3 days.
Greasy hair can make your hair look sparse but this isn’t always the reason why your hair has started to thin in places.
