If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably been glued to your TV screen recently, watching Team GB in the Olympics. With 19 gold medals already won – 50 overall – it’s fair to say that we’re performing amazingly!
The events that we love to watch the most are the swimming and the diving – events we’re close to winning even more medals for! It got us thinking about how all our favourite Olympians manage to keep their hair in such perfect condition?
If you’re a regular swimmer, you’ve probably noticed that your hair looks dry, dull, and spoiled. So how can you fight against the damage caused by chlorine?
Rinse Your Hair with Clean Water
Remember those showers that are usually placed right next to the swimming pool? We know it can be very annoying to go right under the cold water when you’re feeling warm and happy and just want to enter in the pool little by little. But the thing is, these showers are not only good for rinsing sweat and traces of sun cream from your body.
Hair is very porous and tends to soak everything up as if it was a sponge – and that is why it keeps elements such as chlorine for so long. However, if you soak it first with clean, harmless fresh water, it won’t be able to take as many chemicals from the pool.
This can act like a shield, protecting your hair and blocking the damage. You can use olive oil or coconut oil directly bought from the supermarket. Simply put a few drops on your fingers and then massage the end of your hair with them. You’ll notice the difference very soon!
Okay, this is not a fashionable item but hey, you go to the pool for your work out, right? If you want your hair to go through the summer healthy and smooth nothing is better to protect it than a good swim cap. Remember to soak the hair first in fresh water and then put the cap on for an extra level of protection!
Rinse It (Again!)
First thing to do as soon as you get out from the swimming pool is to rinse your hair in clean water again. Forget about trying to dry it with a towel: this will just make it weaker and prone to having broken ends.
Shampoo… with Limits.
Shampooing your hair when you get out of the pool is a good idea to wash the chemicals off. If you swim on a weekly basis, there are special shampoos available for swimmers. Also, it’s a good idea to get yourself a shampoo that is enriched with Vitamin C, which will help your hair to get restored after being in contact with chlorine.
However, remember that nothing will spoil your hair more than shampooing it every single day. Shampoos eliminate the oil that your hair produces daily and which can act as a protective layer. Again, a good rinse with fresh water should be enough to clean your hair if you swim every day
Home-made remedies can be both cheap and effective to take care of your hair. Raising your hair with apple vinegar is a natural – yet very powerful – way to remove chlorine deposits. This will also remove dead skin cells and unclog hair follicles.
