There are no “universal” hair care tips that would cover every single hair type. Everyone’s hair is unique to them, and therefore requires different treatment when it comes to keeping it in good health.
Some people are blessed with mild and tame hair, whilst others face a constant battle against their unruly hair every morning. It’s important that you know the correct way to take care of your own hair type to avoid any hair-raising problems.
Whether straight, curly or somewhere in between, we have compiled a list of some of the most important hair care tips to keep in mind.
People with curly hair often complain about the lack of shine – its uneven surface makes it a lot more difficult to reflect light – leaving it looking incredibly dull. Curly hair also tends to end up frizzy and dry, which are all things that need to be tackled on a daily basis.
There are certain ways in which you can avoid the frustrating frizzing out of your hair. We advise that you don’t brush your curls – you should always untangle your hair with your fingers. You should also avoid using a hair dryer – let your hair dry naturally. Stay away from mousses and gels and moisturise regularly.
People with naturally straight hair tend to hate it, whilst those who don’t look on enviously. Unfortunately, it’s not so straight forward for those blessed with straight locks. The hair tends to lie flat against the scalp, where it picks up more grease, leading to a dull and lifeless appearance.
Regular hair washing is a must for those with straight hair – this should be done every day, or at least every other day. You should avoid using heat products as much as possible, avoid brushing your hair when it’s wet and avoid touching and playing with your hair.
The biggest issue with fine hair is similar to those with naturally straight hair – it tends to be hard to style and tends to always look lifeless. However, all is not lost! There are some things you can do to avoid boring and lacklustre hair.
Avoid using conditioner on your roots as this can weigh your hair down – making it lie limply at the roots. You should also avoid sleeping with wet hair as this just leaves your hair with odd kinks and cowlicks.
Everyone wants thick hair right? Well, everyone but those with thick hair. Apart from it being almost impossible to brush at the best of times, thick hair is also easily affected by the weather – especially by humidity. It also takes a million years to dry after having a shower, but leaving it to dry naturally is not the answer.
Invest in good tangle teaser – you’ll never have to use a brush again. It has flexible bristles that don’t pull on your hair like a standard brush and they are safe to use on wet hair too, which is often a lot more fragile. You should also get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks and always use heat protection products when styling.
