Getting to the Root of the Problem: Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss is something that is primarily linked to men – especially when it comes to the media. There is lots of information and advice for men suffering from male pattern baldness or other hair loss related issues.

But what about women?

Studies show that over 50% of women over the age of 65 will experience female pattern baldness – this is the most common type of hair loss in women. For women who suffer from hair loss, it’s likely that it will be a form of female pattern baldness – but this isn’t the only type of hair loss.

Although it’s something that is rarely discussed, a lot of women will lose hair at some point in their life – not just when they reach a certain age. It’s reported that on average, we lose around 50-100 hairs a day. This doesn’t normally cause any noticeable thinning, due to the fact that our hair is growing at the same time.

So besides female pattern baldness which is hereditary, what are the other causes of hair loss in women?

A Change in Hormones?

Hormonal changes have been linked to hair loss in women, in which changes in the body are responsible for creating an imbalance that affects other areas of the female body. Hair loss experienced during pregnancy, giving birth or the menopause, are common causes of temporary hair loss. In most cases, hair should be back to normal after the hormones have calmed down.

The contraception pill has also been linked to hair loss – due to the hormonal changes that it causes within the body.

Medical Issues

Health problems such as an underactive thyroid could be the cause behind suddenly discovering that your hair has started to thin out. It’s a condition in which your body under produces certain hormones and if left untreated, you’ll suffer a number of health issues – including hair loss.

Over Styling

A lot of the time, hair loss for women isn’t because they have a medical condition or a hormonal imbalance – it’s due to the way you style your hair. Over styling or certain hairstyles can put pressure on your hair follicles and cause them to fall out. This includes using hot appliances to curl or straighten your hair, wearing your hair in constant braids or brushing it too much.
