Common Scalp Problems

Over the past few years, hair care product adverts have flooded our television screens, magazines and internet pages, with an array of products promising us silky, shiny hair. However, what many people overlook is the need to take care of your scalp.

While we all desire luscious, sleek locks and will spend hundreds of pounds a year to achieve this, by getting to the root of the problem and addressing scalp problems, you could achieve beautiful hair much more easily. It is estimated that around 70% of men, women and children suffer from scalp problems, and with an abundance of different conditions, that itching scalp may not just be dandruff.

Dandruff

Usually caused simply by dry skin, this common complaint can be aggravated by certain shampoos and hair products. Luckily, you’ll find a range of products to help you on the high street. Although some hair care experts advise against conditioning at the roots, many advise this method to help ease discomfort.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

One of the most common diagnosable conditions is seborrheic dermatitis and it’s much less exotic name than the name suggests, as it is simply a more advanced version of typical dandruff. Unfortunately, it is often unpredictable, worsening in different environmental changes and stressful situations. This is characterised by red itchy patches on the scalp with a greasy scale or dandruff, but can be remedied with a prescription strength shampoo.

Psoriasis

This is a more severe, but treatable condition that is characterised by painful, itchy and dry skin. Red patches on the scalp are often raised with dead skin, and more severe cases involve hair loss. There are a range of over-the-counter remedies available, as well as natural products such as argan and coconut oil, which can both help to ease symptoms.
